what do you do for a living Zig Forumsbros? how did you get your first job out of uni?

I dropped out lol

Financial Data Analyst. I killed myself to get a job in my last semester of college and managed to get a job at a small bank. It was horrible. I did that for like a year and then got my current job.

part time or internship?

Full-time. I worked at the bank full-time after college now I work for this place full-time.

nice, fucking terrified of the current job market tbqh

Yeah, it’s rough. I work in an industry that has historically been pretty insulated from these sort of things so I’ve been fortunate but I had a promotion skipped and had to take a pay cut so they didn’t lay people off. I think it’s kind of bullshit but I’m glad I have a job and I’m not struggling.

I’m from the US. I studied chemical engineering, learned Japanese, then got a job as a plant engineer here. It’s kind of shit desu. Unless I can massively increase my salary in the next few years I’ll probably head back to the US

how'd you get the small bank job though? just submit an application?

eletrical engineering
they called me. 40k/year

No, I literally found small banks in major cities near me and emailed people who worked there. I probably sent a hundred emails and did dozens of interviews before I got someone to hire me.

What is so shit about it? I would think engineering jobs in Japan would be pretty decent.

statistician
applied for a job

Do you have a Master’s? I’m trying to do this but I don’t have a Stats degree (Econometrics) and I don’t want a Master’s.

i graduated this year, and im only gonna apply for a job when the virus neetbux ends

yeah.
but id say the entry reqs in the uk are probably laxer than in the US.

i mean for becoming a statistician professionally.
id advise working a bit if you can then later getting the masters

damn man my degree is chem eng too, but I'm not a certified engineer if I don't do my masters (Aus uni bullshit). How many years of experience did you have before coming to Japan? Seems unlikely that they'd hire a fresh grad from another country

I’m so I’m already working as a data analyst for a few years. I can get a masters pretty cheap. I just don’t want to. At the same time, I don’t know where to go from here without one.

Nah unless you’re in IT or R&D the median base salary for an engineer right out of college is only around 25K USD. Plus the work culture sucks.

A lot of Japanese companies hire fresh grads if you’re not in a position specifically for foreigners. The interview was in Japanese though so I think language was a big part of it. Still the best route is to get 5-10 years of experience in your home country then apply for a more specialized position because they pay a lot more. I didn’t know that until I talked to other expats here

>Plus the work culture sucks.
What sucks so bad about it? I hear they work a lot but I almost think that’s a good thing and we have plenty of industries here which work a lot too.

IT Management, i couldn't even find a internship because i was too autistic for networking.
Now i'm a mechanic, ain't too bad, i can feed myself and work with something i like.

What is the visa situation like? It's awful here

Yeah, sometimes I hear people complain about pressure to go drinking and whatnot but I think you can just ignore that. it’s pretty much just a lot of work. Even if you get it all done, they’ll find some reason to keep you late. I usually stay until 6:30-7pm, most of my coworkers stay until 7-8pm, some crazy people stay until 9 or 10 pm. I mean if you’re into that then great but I think it starts to get depressing after a while. Weekends are fun though at least

I work in a steel works.

I got my job through nepotism

I've pretty much resigned to the fact that jobs are all dehumanizing trash and I don't try anymore. Went to college for business, put in SO much effort to get an analyst job that everyone thought was great but was actually terrible through and through. So I quit and worked retail until Corona made me unemployed. Everyone in America needs to stop telling themselves "there's something better around the corner" or "other people have better jobs and are happier than me".

The best thing a young person can do is come to the realization that all jobs are bullshit and then going ahead and working long and hard anyway.

I’ve heard it can be tough depending on the situation, but I work for a big company so they had no problem getting me a standard work visa. If I do stay in here after a few years I should be able to upgrade it to a highly skilled foreign worker visa and from there it’s pretty easy to get permanent residence

I'm not lazy, I just don't care about chasing anything considered "better" than what I already have.

>tfw graduated into a pandemic
I honestly don't care if a few old people died why did you have to fuck up the economy?

The economy has been fucked for years unless you're a Rothschild

Based. Would do the same in a heartbeat if i got my connects

Nepotsm but I'm good at my job so it's very ok

lol

Been a NEET since I quit halfway through 9th grade. 28 years old now.
