I know it's not feasible but some kind of anti-trust laws should apply to countries when their population gets too big. Any country with more than ~50 millions inhabitants should be split up in smaller countries of about 50 millions citizens.
Even 50 millions is quite a lot desu, you'll be hard pressed to find a country of more than 20 millions inhabitants where politicians seem slightly concerned about the well being of their constituents.

Federal systems always tend toward concentration of powers so really it's always just a matter of time before a federal country turns to shit. I'm not against it in principle but very often the Federal states ends up being too powerful and the federated states irrelevant so we're back to square one

Land and area instead of populations means that some countries of equal size will have widely different populations. Those who get a large population within their borders will end up invading or flooding the countries with low population density

Who cares about power. Member States care about their economic development while Federation protects them from foreign bullies.
