Turks first came in contact with Samanids (a Persian/Tajik empire in Central Asia) who civilised them and imported them into the muslim world as slave soldiers, so they adopted a lot of Iranian culture initially. Even their 'Turan' is a Persian word from Shahnameh for the ancestral land of Scythians (has nothing to do with Turks)
But the cultures diverged in 1500 when Safavid/Ottoman wars started and they became isolated from each other. Arabs were left on the Sunni side.
