I mean, it’s usually all self reported but the majority of white Americans really are predominantly German ancestry. There are a good amount who are actually Swiss or Austrian or Hungarian or whatever that just get it confused but again, it’s all self reported. Also, it’s just perceived majority. So like my great grandparents on my dad’s side came from Germany while my great grandparents on my mom’s side came from England and Ireland so people like me would probably just respond by saying that they’re German figuring it’s 50% or more.
