The divide was west - east or coast - continental, north - south isn't much of a divide, maybe Croatian dialects up north are closer to Slovene but that's all I can think of.
In the past Romance speaking populations survived in fortified coastal cities just like they did in Dalmatia and later Venetian traders came to some towns that weren't even Italian (Rijeka/Fiume for example)
There are a couple of villages today on the west side of Istria where a large minority consideres themselves Italians (only one where they are a majority).
Today unironically without even memeing large coastal towns suchs as Pula and some others on the west side have far more people from Bosnia or Serbia than they do Italians.
