When I was growing up there was huge political controversy over not making the pledge of allegiance mandatory in schools, not having mandated prayer time in schools, and against teaching evolution in public schools. There was also a pretty significant political battle against seatbelt laws which mandated that minors wear seat belts and their parents would be criminally liable if they weren’t in an accident.
I’m only 26 too so this wasn’t that long ago

I went to school in the deep South and None of that shit happened. We had lessons on evolution, nobody forced you to pledge, and there was sure as fuck no obligatory prayer time.

literally just google “teach the controversy texas” and you’ll find stuff about it. When prayer time was changed to moment of silence parents were furious at my school (I know because my parents were fucking teachers) same about “and under god” being taken out of the pledge. I was nearly suspended from school for refusing to stand for the pledge until my parents got involved.
