That's crazy, because I recently read a full-length ethnography detailing the ways in which the RSS aggressively combated Christian communities and institutions in Chhattisgarh; not only did the RSS open charitable pharmacies to combat the influence of Catholic missions, but it also advocated violence and economic sanctions against Christian alcohol producers.
There are similar academic accounts detailing RSS engagement with Adivasis in Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, in which the RSS actively aggravated communal tensions to better its own position. That's not to suggest that the RSS is necessarily manipulating Hindu Adivasis, but is, instead, providing some communities with increased autonomy by way of state-sanctioned violent action.

As an aside, this campaign of violence was driven by idiotic conspiracy theories and was basically an ill-concealed land grab. Regardless, the author is quite fastidious in documenting how the RSS's growing footprint coincided with new means of intra-communal identification and communication within and between regional tribal groups.
