i think the usa is too big to definitely say which sports are the biggest.
for example, actually playing football is much bigger in the south than in the northeast, but the NFL is far bigger in the northeast than in flyover country.

I'm not a historian, but I'd say 50's-70's was the height of Swedish "soccer" hype.
I think ice hockey sort of took over in the late 70's and has been very popular since.
It's pretty even, but "soccer" is bigger in the south and ice hockey is bigger in the north.
