Actually Japanese is pretty useful if you want to move to India. Japanese companies are playing a massive investment role right now in India's development and knowing both fluent Japanese and fluent English with prior US business experience can land you a stupidly cushy job in Japan or India mediating between the governments or between companies.

Isn't that like the issue with Mandarin though? Sure, if you learn it you might get a very well paid job, but you'll end up having to move to a country that you might not like, I don't think living in India or China is for everyone.

I'm the opposite, Tamil (South Indian guy) who's literate in Tamil and Japanese and a few other langs and really interested in Japan. Was a bit surreal and funny to meet two Japanese people working for Toyota and some Japanese paint company on the bus last time I was in Madras - they were super surprised when I butted in on their Japanese convo but I was surprised that there were Japanese people in India to begin with
