it all comes down to the loss of finland to russia in 1809. after that huge loss sweden decided that it would adopt a permanent policy of neutrality. the resulting 100 years of peace allowed the social democrats to take power and rule the country for 100 years after that.

its not an established fact but i think its probable. sweden is unique in europe because of our extremely long periods of socialist the social democratic party have dominated the political climate COMPLETELY. the socialists have maybe won 90% of all elections since the early 1900s... no other country comes even close to this barring actual communist countries. and the loss of finland (1/3 of our total territory) was so unimaginably detrimental to the swedish psyche that it might have made long term socialist rule possible.

Our national pride hasn't been wrecked by WWII and I don't really see the Sweden thing. They are more or less anti-Germans. If you ask me Scandinavians in general are the way they are because of isolation and irrelevance. There is simply no one there to humble them once in a while. Nothing ever happens so Scandis end up thinking they are the pinnacle of stability and progressiveness.
