The Bundeswehrs published the requirements for it's new assault rifle.
Main requirement is that it's needs to be a not affected by the export regulations of the USA to avoid the increasing amount of sanctions of the USA issued towards it's friends.
This will basically exclude US companies from the competition.

But using an actual mashine gun as mashine gun might obviously couldn't have been the solution....

And more and more products of the USA will be affected by American goverments flip flopping on it's friends.
It still works fine and there Won't be much, but a marginal difference in performance with a new rifle.

The US tried to make a new rifle and LAL they found out was that the only difference you can make is giving soldiers fancy airbursting rounds since the rifle was pretty much perfected in the 60s/70s

All Zeitsoldaten I know are happy with the G36(all artillery and artilleriy reconaissance) but there were a handfull of soldiers that managed to get the rifle to fail in a mashine gun role in Afghanistan.

Can I get a non-meme answer as to why the Bundeswehr is so terrible and underfunded? I get the war guilt and everything. However, given the hatred of the U.S. in Germany it seems like they would want their own strong military. Instead of relying on the U.S. for everything.

The Bundeswehr is not underfunded. Every soldier will tell you we are setup all well. The only problem is the number of soldiers! And there is no way you will get more people to join without reintroducing conscription. And conscription is political suicide.
Especially as conscription in the last years was realy dumb as only a fraction of the possible conscripts were recruited...so there were lucky ones and unlucky ones that had to serve and start earning money a year later.

2 or 3 years ago I could read that most of the Eurofighter fleet was not combat-ready and the U-boot were all in dry dock for maintenance.

There is some shit happening like cannibalization. That is a result of realy bad logistics und better funding could improve that. But there is also enough of everything that soldiers you can steal stuff without anyone noticing something is missing.
