Actually they were designed to be more communal housing. The soviet style commeiblocks often had shared kitchens and bathrooms. Couple of families sharing them

Ok but tearing these buildings down costs more than keeping them up. Using them as temporary housing is retarded. They had to tear down a 20 story commie block here because it was rusting and became uninhabitable and the cost was enormous. Now there's a public park in its place.

Pretty sure they were just designed to be cheap and easy to build. I've read multiple opinions of people who actually like this style.
Anyway I'd have no problem living in a building that looks like shit as long as it is modern on the inside by which I mean fast internet and I don't hear my neighbors no matter how loud they are.

This is the reason why some russians have carpets hanging on walls. Not to say you can hear your neighbors chatter casually, but once they raise their tone you can kinda pick up the noise. Also carpets kill echo.
