Germany is very Americanized. Many people don't cook local cuisine anymore. If they do they use shortcuts like traditional cuisine or use shortcuts like prepacked food. Also lots of fusion food and fastfood.

Traditional cuisine tends be rustic and hearty. Alsatian cuisine shares some dishes with the regional cuisines of the South West. Other regions have different cooking styles. If you like traditional regional cuisine they are worth a try.

Potatoes are a very common side. But fried potatoes are more common than potato salad. If you already like potato salad you might want to try Nudelsalat (noodle salad).

I guess because it is more convenient. Preparing good food requires skill and is more time consuming than heating something up. Also more people are single and many dishes are thought to be prepared for the whole family.
