For some retarded reason, servers in America can legally be paid less than minimum wage. The idea is that the rest of their living expenses is earned through tips (which basically means the restaurant owner is forcing the customer to pay part of the workers' salaries in addition to the price they're already paying).
You can imagine that if you're an average man this really fucks you over, but if you're an attractive woman you could end up earning as much as twice minimum wage. This retarded shit is also why giving a 5% tip is considered a tip for "bad service". When in the rest of the world, giving a tip at all is a compliment and not expected.
