I leave $20+ tips all the time, even for small orders, even if it's a 200% tip. Spread the wealth, etc. Food service fucking sucks dick. The idea that I can make someone's day for so little money is one of the seven simple ways I draw positive fulfillment from life.

Unfortunately, that's not really how things work. It's a part of our culture, where we have taken the fine-dining tradition of tipping your server and maitre-de, and brought it to all levels of establishment. Under the current system, servers and tipped staff in general can expect to make quite a bit more money than if they were given a living wage.

This does not just include in food service, but I tend to tip some other professions as well, even those not explicitly expected to be tipped. The free exchange of small amounts of money, above standard, feels good. I suppose there is a sense of excess to it, which I quite enjoy. A primal notion of "Our food stores are overflowing, please take some extra grain" is encoded in each tip. When I was a younger lad, on the receiving end of such generosity, I always deeply appreciated the symbolism of the gesture. That is the philosophy of tipping.

To that end, because it's a part of my culture, and because I enjoy the act of giving material gifts to strangers, I will continue to tip until the day I die.
