Being overweight/obese has become so endemic in the US that people think it is perfectly normally. Pointing out that it is an historical aberration for the majority of a population to be overweight is met with indignation. They truly believe that it is just "the way they were born". It's genetic. If you point out that in the 1950's the obesity rate in the US was under 10% and now it is roughly 2/3's of the population they have no answer.
Having a normal BMI is viewed as being skinny.
For most of history, being overweight was a sign of idle wealth. People with lots of money and nothing to do. I'd say that is still true.
