It's a service economy and comparative advantage means we always have something to give. We get resources from poor countries while EU has the expertise to make products from them. Come automation and the productivity numbers will skyrocket in countries like Japan or future federal Europe. The moment automation has spread to poor countries they aren't anymore poor and globalization has conquered all and uplifted every nation on the planet. Then there can come time for communism, luxury space communism with globally linked Earth starting to exploit the solar system. No poverty, no capitalism (that was the great engine for all this), no greediness, just the drive to better our one human race.

The times where Finnish economy could rely on east trade with USSR or artificially drive down Markka and not worry about becoming competitive are long past. The fall of SU was a god send in that it pushed Finnish economy to accept globalization and actually become competitive economy. Things have never been this good (sans COVID -19) and they will become even better.

Which will no longer occur if said poor countries are raised to our standard. You will lose your advantage as poor countries become the new rich countries, but unlike you they have the resources to outcompete other nations. It’s one of the reasons why Europeans looked outside of Europe for colonies in the first place, to gain access to other resources. Europe cannot stay rich without exploiting countries on the bottom. If that hierarchy changes, your wealth will go along with it, or at the very least, your global share of it. Even in the wake of automation, countries with resources will still be better off than countries without them due to export and import cost if nothing else.

I think Europe is shrinking as a whole because they are so small and mostly dont want to have kids and extreme xenophobia prevents them from opening their borders.
That said, life is great and getting better and better. 1980s had no smart phones. 2020s does. The world as a whole is getting richer. Nobody is getting poorer except a few small outliers and subpopulations here and there (and no, increasing inequality is NOT the same thing as increasing poverty...get it right).
