What's the logic behind imprisoning a mass-murdering terrorist for only 21 years with possibility of parole?
I'm aware that it's the maximum allowed sentence, but:
>pushing for a longer sentence due to exceptionally severe crimes should be easy, New Zealand gave Tarrant the country's first ever life without parole sentencing
>there's no chance of him living a decent life outside prison, starting a new life as a 53 year old with any potential employer knowing he's a terrorist
>he gave every reason to believe that he'd do it again as soon as he got the chance

Also, if the point of limiting a sentence to 21 years is to show some level of mercy, why 21 years of solitary confinement? The only thing I can see that accomplishing is psychological damage. Given how much it'd suck being outside prison for him, it'd be a lot better for everyone if he was given non-solitary life without parole.

Because it's funnier and far more psychologically painful to wave that parole in front of his face every 20 years. Norwegians are fucked up. They even force him to play vidya using a ps2.

Because the nordic law system believes in reform not punishment. They hope maybe he can be fixed.

They're not letting him out on the streets once his sentence is up. Norway isn't full of retards and they have a long fucking time to figure out what their plan is to deal with him, whether that be execution, or just having him under house arrest so he can't go anywhere or do anything once he's out.

I'm gonna take a shot at 2 possible reasons:

1. When you make your laws, you cover all your bases and then you stick to them. If that's their maximum sentence for such a crime so be it, but throwing the law out the window for one person makes you look like a joke.

2. He choose very particular targets, future politicians, groomed to be the next generation of the left wing parties in their country as I understood it? I heard people mention that a lot of people there low key agree with him, which might explain his mild treatment.

I heard Brevik recently tried suing the Norwegian government because he thought the random strip searches somehow violated his human rights.

Yeah, it’s pretty unlikely he’ll ever be released. Doing so would jeopardize his safety or the public’s. They’ll just keep denying him parole every time he becomes eligible. It’s the same reason why we will never release John Lennon’s assassin.
