current US debt is 136% to GDP. during ww2 it was 120%. we know war has gotten far more expensive. ww2 cost the US 4trillion inflation adjusted dollars. iraq war cost almost 2 trillion and that was just to fight a enemy that couldn't even defend itself. a war with china would make the US borrow at least 10trillion dollars + the cost of the pandemic hasn't even been billed yet. so debt to GDP would sky rocket close to 200% a level unheard of. when i say the US can't afford a war right now. i mean it. such levels of debt could implode the economy. the US is in perfect shape to defend itself, but the cost of a prolonged war is out of the question right now given the shape of the economy and levels of debt.

there is limitations. there is no objective criteria where there is too much debt or exactly when debt starts dragging on the economy. but it's known that having high levels of debt makes investors worry about the risk. can the US go to 100% debt to GDP? no problems, we've seen that happen for decades. can they go 200%? 300%? 400%? that's when the uncertainty comes in and makes people a bit scared.

I found out recently that a large portion of the US's defense spending isn't on making ships/tanks/jets or R&D. But it's because they're paying for the thousands of soldiers in the hundreds of military bases they have around the world.

China only has like 2 military bases with small numbers of troops there.
