Greece was already declining by the time of Alexander. The great poleis of Athens, Sparta, Thebes and Corinth had been subjugated by the decidedly ungreek Macedonian monarchy, and while Alexander's conquests ushered in the Hellenistic period, the times of the great innovations of the Classical period were long gone, and the Hellenistic period only lasted 150 years at most and was an era of constant warfare between the descendants of Alexander's diadochi, which allowed the emerging power of Rome to take over Greece. Now, in their defence, the period where Greek culture dominated the entire Eastern Mediterranean was extremely prosperous, and led to the rise of syncretic movements like Hellenistic Judaism, which influenced Early Christianity (hence why the New Testament is written in koiné).
One large part of the Greek legacy to the West is the cult of reason. The Gospel of John starts with the following sentence: >Ἐν ἀρχῇ ἦν ὁ λόγος, καὶ ὁ λόγος ἦν πρὸς τὸν θεόν, καὶ θεὸς ἦν ὁ λόγος.
Most editions translate it as "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God". Except the meaning of λόγος isn't as clear as that, and rather than word it can also mean "reason". Indeed, the cult of reason originating from Greek culture, and also the field of theology, a Greek word, greatly changed the European approach to God and to Abrahamic religions, even when faced with such a foreign custom, eventually leading to the rise of secularism in the West. Without the Greek tradition conflicting with the Judeo-Christian one, our approach to Abrahamic religions might be a lot more similar to that of Muslims, and thus Western society would be extremely different.
Credit must be given where it's due. Yes, the Greeks underwent a huge decline, perhaps the steepest of all, but no civilisation can stay on top forever.
This is why translating texts to other languages sucks
