That's basically what happened. All of the old Soviet industries got stolen by gangsters, while living standards collapsed. Putin and the siloviki literally wired the entire Communist Party treasury to offshore banks and just kept it.

Life steadily returned from chaos of 1990s back to normal.

We demanded that Russia switch to capitalism as fast as possible by auctioning off every state enterprise to the highest bidder. Turns out the only people who came out of communism wealthy enough to bid for these assets were corrupt officials. Who could have known?

To be fair, everytime the government tries to privatise anything, even in already capitalist countries, it's always the corrupt that benefit the most from that.

The state became strong, large mafia groups either merged with the state (under the threat of life sentences) or were killed, minor criminals were imprisoned for short sentences. A prison in Russia is hell on earth, nobody wants to go there, even though there are professional convicts romanticizing this culture.

That's the real purpose of privatization. Fuck people, gibs me dats industry.

Its already been answered. The 90s caused chaos and turmoil in the country but then things returned to normal. Quality of life and law and order steadily improved.

The gopnik culture kinda faded away
80s and early 90s kids would remember having parents not letting them go outside past 6pm, but it's not a thing anymore at all. In fact zoomers just hang around outside at night doomer-mode and chilling everywhere
Nowadays there are very few gopniks, at least in the city centres and big cities

There was a major economical collapse back then and everyone were poor, and the stores had no food on the shelves
Lots of people born in 60s and early 70s turned to crime because it was the only reliable way of making money and providing for your family
This sort of time fucked people up, so when these people started having families there was lots of abuse, alcoholism, etc, which in turn created gopniks
Also gopniks praised the criminal word, they were sort of LARPers, but nowadays not so many people LARP that way, which also affected the decline of the gopnik culture. Most people who'd be gopniks were they born 10 years earlier are currently into military stuff (weapons, vehicles, going hiking in military gear, etc)
