Has any country or city blown your expectations out of the water?

I just got back from a week in Krakow, Poland.

When my friend mentioned it a few weeks ago, I was a bit reluctant and slightly apprehensive in my expectations. I didn't really know much about the place and my research was limited. Generally, I like visiting places without reading into too much detail just because I prefer to experience things first hand.

I even remember a year ago when a girl at my work suggested visiting there me, I was kind of weirded out like "Is that even somewhere people go?"

Now I'm back, and boy do I have to admit, I don't think I've ever fallen in love with somewhere this much before. The place is just beaming with culture and things to see and do. Pristine streets, beautiful food (great prices too), awesome people and some of the most, if not THE most gorgeous girls I've ever come across in my life. I'm truly taken back.

For me, there's always something that puts me off a city in some regard. Either it's migrant groups, that create a ghettoised atmosphere, something I've experienced in most of Western Europe, or something else like the place just not living up to expectations in terms of the city just being kind of lame, (for example Vienna which I visited last month). If any Polish bros read this, thank you for keeping this place so beautiful.

I'm already planning my trip back to Poland as we speak, does anyone have any suggestions? I'm currently looking at Wroclaw which seems to be the top pick for most people.

Also feel free to let us know about similar cities or countries, ones you didn't really expect much out of but blew you away when you visited.

Bulgaria blew me away with how shitty it was. I did not know it was possible to be shittier than countries like Indonesia, Morocco and USA.

tell your countrymen to stop drinking and shouting during kraków weekends and we take same of our bydło back

I visited Krakow and some other cities in Silesia, but I knew beforehand it was good.
I also like some mid sized cities in northern Italy, they always make for nice short holidays, and not many tourists in places like Ferrara or Bergamo.
Last city that really took me by surprise was Albi, France, like one of the most picturesque places I've ever seen and virtually no tourists.

Siena, Portofino, San Gimignano

This is probably the one thing that I gathered may let the city down in some way. I'm honest enough to recognise that is a massive fucking problem and it really pisses me off too, if I'm honest with you.

I guess at the minute not many of them are about because of Covid because I didn't encounter many, but definitely a few.

I'm not by any means one of those limp wristed cucks who harps on about how their country and people are shit or whatever, but I as a Brit, probably despise those loud mouth drunk cunts more than you. I drink in the evenings and have fun, obnoxious I am not.

I liked Wrocław, though I have no other major Polish city to compare it to

Was Wroclaw beaming with pretty girls everywhere?

>silesia
>good
you have to be some sort of a urban industrial fan to think silesia is any good

I was there for a sports event, and while some industrial stuff is ugly, there is surprisingly a lot of pretty country side and small town. Also people are very friendly once you informed them that you are not German but Swiss.
I was in Gdansk and Świnoujście also, they are nice, but not that special. Gdansk has a nice groove tho.

Southern Germany, if only because the rest of "Western" Europe alternates between lifeless gray sprawl that makes Vegas look nice and Rust Belt-esque decay.

I wouldn't say beaming, but I saw some pretty lasses for sure. one really breathtaking one.

don't get me wrong, im a schlesien bvll myself and find it comfy there but holy shit is that place rundown in some places

Silesia is far from the post industrial hellhole you are imagining.
Sure, there some places like those degraded districts of Bytom or Ruda Śląska, but there is a lot to see in the region.

this, I was also about to say Krakow

Rome, everyone told me it was gonna be some kind of shithole full of pickpockets/lots of touristy scams etc, but because i'd been reccomended good restaurants to visit and went in October I actually had a really REALLY good time. It's not exactly clean by any means but I think that gives it some of its own charm.

I started my tour in Rybnik, site of Polands biggest coal power plant, and guess what, the town itself is really nice! It is clean, historic, lots of nature around, fuck there was even a sailing regatta on the plants cooling pond.
Thats said, I'm a touri and I only saw like 3 places in Silesia.

Anyone that says Rome is a shitholes is an obvious seether

Poland is based.

india completely changed my definition of a shithole
i've visited ~40 countries and that was the only time i seriously thought about changing my return tickets to an earlier date (i didn't because they were the cheapest tickets and it would've cost too much)
there are very few things i'd rather not do than visit india again

I spent 3 weeks in Rome, fucking heaven if you stay away from Trastevere and other tourists traps.
This spring I want to visit Napoli if possible, got a buddy who's family has a pension in Sorrent.

I've never seen more hookers on the street in my life than in Krakow

I'm always blown away by the BEAUTY of the COMMONWEALTH of MASSACHUSETTS

Go on

Rome is alright. Italian cities only go to shit around the Naples.

Wrocław and Warsaw and Gdańsk are all popular tourist destinations for westoids with lots of things to do, you can't go wrong with those.
if you're feeling more adventurous, you can also try Lublin. some poet said that Lublin and Kraków are the only two Polish cities that have a soul.
while near Kraków you can also check out Zakopane. it's a small city in the Tatra mountains with it's own unique architectural style created by Stanisław Witkiewicz. it was "disovered" by artists and intelligentsia in the XIX century and was a popular place of retreat with it's own bohemian atmosphere and unique art community. and there are some spectacular hiking routes there. it's touristified to hell now days sadly, so try visiting it in the off season.

Nice bait Jarosmir

i just liked being able to go to a random alleyway and find nice places to eat

i went in 2011. it's a non-stop noisy, messy, dirty, poverty fuelled, diarrhoea soaked country with no redeeming qualities
if you're a tall white man you stick out like a sore thumb and literally tens of people will follow you asking for money. children came to my hotel room door knocking and begging
everything sold on the street is a scam. take nothing at face value. i bought a fake zippo lighter, the pajeet had 1 real fake one out for display but once i gave him money he took a plastic piece of shit from a bag and tried to give me that one
beaches are covered in litter and actual, real, shit. you have to walk through at least 50 meters of trash and shit to get to the water. not that you'd want to, because it's not much better
the food is absolutely disgusting. they use spoilt meat in everything and try to mask it by making it as spicy as humanly possible. 100% you can get a better curry in ireland
everyone will try to rip you off. i stayed in a "4" star hotel. the receptionist will take any cash you give him. you will never get anything back. if you're stupid enough to give them your credit card, they'll empty it as soon as possible. they let beggars into the hotel. prices are never the same they were the day before. if you order something without showing the item from the menu (with the price) you'll end up paying 3x more. there is no concept of queuing, if you're not rubbing up against the person in front of you, 3 people will try to force themselves in the gap. everything stinks, the temperature is always way too high and there are millions of homeless animals on the streets
to top it off, designated shitting streets are not a meme. there are very few toilets in the whole country. the one i had in my hotel was just a fucking hole in the ground you had to squat over

when i tried to leave my hotel, they claimed i hadn't paid for the stay. i actually paid in advance (big mistake, it's a miracle they hadn't "lost" my reservation)

Krakow was nice.
Lots of British people.
They were all extremely drunk and loud.
Some were singing their British songs loudly in the streets.
Eating one of those salt bagels in front of St. Peter and Paul church admiring the building. A British guy described enthusiastically as "one cracking building."

When i went to Jordan i was blown away by the rich touristy areas and the respectable locals. Much better then Egypt.

Istanbul was also amazing but the people less so.
