the minarets of ISTANBVL
Well, I quit my job down at the car wash
Left my mama a goodbye note
By sundown I'd left Kingston
With my guitar under my coat
I hitchhiked all the way down to Memphis
Got a room at the YMCA
For the next three weeks I went huntin' them nights
Just lookin' for a place to play
Well, I thought my pickin' would set 'em on fire
But nobody wanted to hire a guitar man

It's honestly just middle-aged dudes who were on TV talking shit for an hour and a half.
There's a lot of inside jokes, so it might take a minute to get used to it.
And don't start at episode 1
I rarely start stuff at episode one since it tends to improve over the years
based
They have some underrated hits
Besides stuff that has a chronological narration I guess

i wonder where the modern idea of the importance of preserving monuments comes from
there was a town inside the colosseum at one point, yet the inhabitants didn't believe the colosseum to be some treasure of high civilization that should be preserved. they merely saw the utility of living within the former arena's walls. a church and later mosque was built within the parthenon, but no one thought this was defacing 'their history' or desecration of any kind.
nobody gives a shit about things when they're normal, nobody cared about a Model T in 1920 but now in 2020 people will go to ends of the earth to restore or preserve one now that it is historically significant.
There is a bit of a difference in apolitically repurposing a monument that you/your group has a sense of ownership for and willfully destroying the monuments of others because of a political agenda
Not that southerners are all pro-monument or that everyone would be fine if you turned Lee's house into a mosque or something but you can't really compare that ancient situation to the current trend of angrily striking out against historical signifiers from one specific side of the political compass
If people didn't make any attempt to preserve these things in the past, they wouldn't be around today. If they were completely utility-minded then ancient ruins would have been plundered for their raw building materials long ago. It's definitely not a new concept, but nowadays there is a standardized and rigid methodology for doing it all and professionals who dedicate their lives to it.
As for plebs not comprehending that something is a treasure of human civilization, that is perfectly feasible today. The Enlightenment/Renaissance also instilled a reverence for antiquity in people that is still palpable today; in the medieval period people didn't care nearly as much about the ancients or view them as the architects of the Judeo-Christian world.
i didn't mean to tie this to the confederate monument thing, sorry if i caused that confusion, it was just a general question. i believe it directly relates to the rise of the idea of the nation-state, but i wanted to get other opinions. i originally thought of this because of how isis goes about destroying ancient pagan structures today much the same way early christians did, but what caused christian iconoclasm to die out while islamic iconoclasm continued.
Stones were taken from the coliseum for building other things. Some things don't get demolished because it's impractical or there is no reason to.
Im a southern catalan, can I join the party?
