I went to Palermo and nobody called themselves Italians, they called themselves Sicilians, which is a bit odd. Then I went to Venice, and same thing but Venetians. Italian regionalism is rampant.

There are a lot of countries in the world that are actually a lot of ethnicities speaking different languages, LARPing as one people.
