99% of Chileans have Spanish ancestry(around 40% of that being Basque while the rest Castillian/Andalusian). Chile was mostly empty when the conquistadors arrived because of it's geography therefore native population was low until the freemason O'Higgins (funded by anglos) "liberated" Chile and removed the caste system. This meant that the natives were allowed back to society and you have Chile today. Today I'd say only around 10-20% of the population is of 90%+ European descent. The only notable ancestry group outside Spanish are probably Italians.

Yes during my last visit I realized Chile is VERY castizo/mestizo. Worst is that most mestizos believe they are white. Luckily my bloodline was able to survive.

I think in everyday life there is hardly any issue with race. Maybe the ocasional banter but nothing too serious among younger generations. Not that I have witnessed, at least. But snobbish people (from any class, but more likely in upper classes) sometimes may take mapuche or other "indians" as inferior.
This creates less/worse job opportunities for them. This makes them poorer, this makes their offspring less educated and then the prejudice confirms/perpetuates itself. They have other customs too. Not sure how much this have compounded the problem, but certainly has.

Then there are historic issues, like non mapuche chileans taking by force their lands in past centuries and they claiming them back. A lot of land is in the wood industry now, in hands of large companies and a lot of money is at stake. Certain mapuche has attacked logging trucks and shit, and the government has sent special police units to try and control this without success... so there are tensions about this too.

Among many other stuff, the protests have mentioned this sort of issues. They propose to make Chile a "plurinational" state or something like that. Make our constitution one that guarantees rights for our native nations, respecting their cultural differences.
