Lutherans and the more liturgical churches maintain a lot of the similar traditions, priesthood, the office of the bishop etc. They reject the authority of the pope , celibate clergy, and the Real Presence (I think, don't skin me alive). Similar situation for the Anglican communion and Methodists.

Evangelical Christians reject not only the pope, but bishopric, the real presence, the concept of canonizing saints, confession, liturgical worship, and any authority higher than the congregation. Each congregation ultimately decides who they want to be their "minister" (they do not use the word priest), each member of the congregation interprets the bible -often obtusely literally- as they individually feel the "holy spirit is leading" them to conclude about a given thing. It is hard to say much more about them, because there is not uniformity beyond this.

If you are talking about the ORIGINAL protest, Martin Luther got upset at a number of things like Latin Mass, restrictions on ownership of the Bible, and the lavish life enjoyed by certain church officials, and many other such things. He suggested reforms, and the Pope had him excommunicated and the Emperor tried him and tossed his ass in jail. A certain Prince intervened and had him continue his work. A bunch of German princes got behind him and made it their state religion.

With regards to The use of the scriptures as the primary authority for doctrine is why the US churches are in such a mess to begin with. The new testament, while very powerful and filled Truth, is not sufficiently exhaustive to answer all doctrinal questions.
