I don't like Austrians but I genuinely hate being in the same country as Bosnians no matter what religion they are, and having Bosnia as part of the empire turned out to be a fatal mistake anyways. I honestly woudn't care for the collapse of the empire if the outcome didn't involve us entering an even worse country.

I strongly disagree. For one thing, the situation in Russia in 1900 was drastically different from the situation in 1914, in large part due to the humilitation of the Russo-Japanese War of 1905 and the revolution that followed. From an economical standpoint, Russia was growing and modernizing its infrastructure, in particular its railways. This leads me to another major player: Germany was genuinely terrified of a growing Russia in 1914 (many in German high command believed that they had until 1917 at the very latest to start a war against Russia, after which it would be too late and any way would be unwinnable). This wasn't a factor in 1900. It's like comparing China 2006 to China 2020. It's two completely different animals, and likewise the Americans' stance on China was radically different in 2006 compared to now. And speaking of being afraid of growing powers: the UK in 1900 was still very far ahead of Germany in most respects (in particular its naval power), and so had no reason to be wary of Germany. By 1914 this was different, as Germany had undertaken a rapid expansion of its navy, and if given a lot more time they could eventually overtake the Royal Navy altogether.

Even though we weren't an independent country at the time there is something charming in the pre-WWI Belle Epoque-era. It was the perfect combination of good old culture and practically modern technology. I often fantasize about living in a world with early 1900s technology: Cars, steamships, trains, landline telephones, rudimental aeroplanes, camera, film camera... Enough but not too much.

And don't forget the best architecture.
