Do they speak the same thing the classical Maya spoke, or some kind of dumbed down derivative like Italian or French are to Latin?

>Do they speak the same thing the classical Maya spoke
of course
every single language on the planet changes and evolves with time but not Maya as they're special spacefaring alien people

>Do they speak the same thing the classical Maya spoke
maya itself is broken up into different dialects, so im curious to see what they go with.

Very cool

Ultra cringe

We also have mandatory English classes from elementary school, but that doesn't mean that they are effective. Few people in Mexico actually speak English.

They speak yucatec, one of the many maya languages. Classic maya, ch'olti', went extinct back in the 18th century.

Ngl that's actually pretty cool

How is the Spanish-level of the average Yucatánese/Mayan?

>"Maya" is a modern collective term for the peoples of the region, however, the term was not historically used by the indigenous populations themselves. There was no common sense of identity or political unity among the distinct populations, societies and ethnic groups because they each had their own particular traditions, cultures and historical identity.
from the same wikipedia page you posted. read motherfucker, do you even read?

yeah I'm thinking they're back

They are completely fluent. Maya is a minority language AFAIK. I visited Mérida once and I have a few friends from the peninsula, and all of them speak Spanish.

Nice

I think is fake, I tried to search on the state constitution and the state official journal and couldn't find it

AZTLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN

>Americans will have to learn Maya

Thanks for the answer.

Well, I thought for a second that maybe Yucatec Mayan will turn into something like Latin in Europe; i.e. a language for their wewuzzing and for reading some old scripts. But then again I am not sure, if there is enough old stuff for them to read.
In the end, the ones trying to get economically successful will stick to learning in Spanish and English, I guess.

That's great and all but ultimately futile. Globalization kills all small language communities. It's gonna end up like Irish eventually

too many spanish loanwords
even nahuatl sounds weird

>own particular traditions, cultures and historical identity.
Notice how it doesn't say language

Still, Their language is not reconstructed, millions of people in southern Mexico and Central America are native speakers of maya languages.

holy shit the US will be trilingual in 20 years because of this

> WOWIE ZOWIE MUH DEAD LANGUAGE I CAN'T WAIT TO SPEND MILLIONS TO MAKE OUR MANUFACTURING SECTOR LESS COMPETITIVE
multi-linguism is a meme.

Someone seems butthurt

>tf
>tp

National identity is the building block of any successful country

OP is talking about "Yucatec Mayan", around 800 000 people speak it as a mother tongue in Mexico

>it's this time again

Imagine being proud of being an ignorant ameriburger.

I agree. It's just a way to spend more money on useless shit. Theres government funded news in quechua and some other language, I can see it becoming a whole TV station in some years. Why? Just teach propper spanish, it's not liike most people can speak it properly anways.
I think it will divide people even more.

its not funny retards. yucatecos have always hated mexico and they will probably attempt to leave (again) in a close future. we need the money from their beaches

Imagine hating on indigenous languages
>B-BUT IK OOK, YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT IT"S LIKE
Yes we do, we deal with Frisian retards just fine.
