I do worry about this as a guy who came from a working class family, but who got lucky by being gifted a high IQ and priceless opportunities. I went to an Ivy league-tier school, got a PhD, but man the people I met... Saying they have a leg up doesn't do justice to it. Nearly all of them were from the upper middle class families with parents who also had PhDs. Their parents cared about their success, often visited them. My parents dropped out of high school. If I had been born just 20 or 30 years later I don't think I would have made it.

Neither of these are true. Up north you can buy a decent house either as a generic white collar worker or as a couple of minimum wagers. A doctor/accountant can buy a very nice house, a couple of doctors/accountants can buy a gigamansion. It may be harder to get on the property ladder now than it was in the past but ti isn't particularly difficult, plus housing is pretty much the only area where it has got more difficult.
