Bokmål is closer to spoken East-Norwegian than written danish is to spoken danish. It's updated to fit the way people speak. Also you could also use Nynorsk if you like.

East Norway and Oslo used to be a part of the Danish kingdoom until the 13th century, while West Norway was it's own kingdom. That Norwegians are an entity, and that Danes are a different entity is just a new construct. East Norwegian have probably always been closer to Danish than Western Norwegian. It's just a coincidence that the Norwegian, Danish and Swedish borders are the way they are. People did not use to define themselves as Norwegians or whatever, they were defined by their small communities and villages, and people in Scandinavia spoke the same language.

I'm mad about the theft of Greenland and Iceland, but the language part is really our own fault. We've been free from them for more than 200 years, we've had plety of time to fix the language issues, and the Faroe Islands were able to do it.
