“Yellow” started as a way of differentiating Asians from Europeans way back when trade between the two was just becoming common. Europeans were already considered “white” so in order to differentiate the two they referred to Asians as “yellow” since some working class Asians developed a yellowish tint to their skin with the sun whereas Europeans turned pink or red.

Japanese luckily belong to Northern group. But we still carry some amount of Shitskin Austronesian genes, so some are yellow-ish.
