The early revolutionaries well as most devout Iranians were extremely self-conscious about their image to Arabs and Sunnis, Khomeini was basically an Ikhwani Sufi wearing shia clothing. So we adopted and played the role of rabid Israel haters to compensate for never being considered or treated as real Muslims. It's a source of immense and deep insecurity in our collective consciousness, or at least it used to be. It is the contradictory reality of being a Persian, you want to be accepted by the new faith but you also refuse to truly immerse in the identity and abandon your fire worshipping past.

This is the only real source of our hostility to the west and Israel which is mostly a LARP, as you called it.
