I would argue that the cultural link between Europe and the US has been severed long ago. Many white Americans wouldn't agree to the European values of dirigisme (= state control of the economy to an extent), powerful government, free and public healthcare, free and public transportation, regulations for food, labour, urban planning, etc. Conversely the "American way of life" does not appeal to most young European anymore ; if you asked the average European where he would most like to live, they would say Switzerland, Sweden, Finland, Ireland, rather than the United States. It's a big difference from the 20th or the 19th century.
Race relations are another example of how widely different both countries are. In Europe, races are believed to be non-existent. Politics very rarely talk about it and it's commonly accepted that races don't exist and don't matter. What matters is rather how the minorities integrate in our society. In the US, race is a very important topic, and you have loud people on either side claiming supremacy and asking reparations or particular treatment.
And finally, "ethnic 'minorities' " are actually much more sympathetic to a European vision of politics and welfare (see how popular Sandars was) and in Europe, non-whites highly prefer the American approach to race rather than the European one.

You didn't need to become a "brown nation" to see the collapse of your trade unions, the explosion of debts (most European citizens abhor getting into debt ; imagine convincing them to move in a country where their kid may have to take a loan to go to college, and unlike private schools in France or the UK that loan isn't even guaranteed by the State). It has to do with your (real or perceived) values : love of profit above everything else ; lack of social safety nets ; superficiality in friendly relationships (the infamous "American smile") and lack of culture.
Your obsession with race also puts you at odds with a continent where race is a non-issue for 90% of the population. What matters in Europe is integration for most people.
Obama may have been non-white, he may have misunderstood Europe and privileged relationships with other countries, but believe me he was a much more respected leader than the white Trump.
