It’s still our own language though. Yours have been long lost. Algerians are supposed to speak a Romance language, not Arabic. A dialect of it, anyway.

This is one of the very best paintings in the museum which is a few blocks away from me, it's one of my absolute favorites there. I first saw it as a teenager with family and I've always loved it. Also there is no such thing as a god and mohammed is a false prophet. Lovely colors in the painting though, the reproduction doesn't do it any justice (aren't you people supposed not to make graven images?)

Our actual ancestral language is Tamazight (or rather the various dialects thereof) and it's never been lost. I and millions of my countrymen speak it.

Yes, I'm not familiar with how distinct German and Swiss German are from each other but I can tell you that it's impossible for the average Middle Easterner to understand us Maghrebis, although not vice versa. This in a sense makes us the Swiss Germans and them the Germans in your example, because I believe a similar dynamic exists with that language.
