Of course, a professional, volunteer soldiery is comprised of a bloodthirsty, greedy lot, one wholly uncaring with regard to the defence of the commonwealth, only looking to secure their own wallet. This is why a regularly rotating, conscripted citizen-force is preferable, as it dismembers the will to independent action of the armies, and disempowers the officer corps.

And what incentive would a rotating citizen force have to build an effective military? They’d seek to simply serve their term with the minimum effort possible or use their service to enrich their civilian wallet afterward.

The effective military, to my mind, is one ready to face an existential threat. Even if the conscripts have as little interest in the process as possible, they will at least achieve some training in all matters relating to being a soldier. This large body of citizens with some knowledge as to an effective defence of the commonwealth is why conscription is more ideologically appealing to me than a professional army.

dunno, i got c-pepers

our army only exists on paper

morale of mercs is always lower, and morale is important

>australian army
just americans reserve basically

Completely unnecessary. I did 6 months mandatory service and it is the most irrelevant institution in our cunt. Couldn't defend a shitter box. The officers are self entitled pricks who wouldn't survive a day in private industry. Most recruits are demotivated just there to run down the clock

Except American PMCs proved that totally wrong. Mercs are often more effective, with better equipment, and better soldiers.

Full of zoomers looking for government gibs or have nothing better to do in life

Right so my whole point is a conscript army interested only in doing the bare minimum can hardly be considered as “ready to fight an existential threat”. American SOF is arguably the most effective fighting force on the planet in 2020 and not only are they highly paid relatively speaking, but they’re highly selective. Conscripts they are not.

I always thought the Austrian defense force was pretty top tier among smaller euro nations

Are you not acquainted with the Discourses?

conscripts aren't discriminated. That means conscript armies are filled with soyboys and people that don't want to be there. Bloodthirsty, passionate soldiers fight a whole lot better.

useless and mostly used as a dumping ground for societies' and politic's undesirables.
if you're german chancellor and want to get rid of an incompetent politician, just make him minister of defense

US
Bloated, both figuratively and literally. The standards are shit and the military itself is inefficient. The fat needs to be trimmed.

It's inefficient on purpose

Von der Leyen did pretty well for herself no? Now she has a cushy EU job

Best in Europe

The Swedish Army is superior to all the rest of them combined.

Sweden may not be a superpower in the conventional sense, but we are a moral superpower. Our superior morality makes the Russians quiver with fear.

>Except American PMCs proved that totally wrong.
American PMC's never had to fight in a real war when air support, MRE's with skittles and toilet paper are unaffordble luxuries.
Half of those shitters probably loudly complain when their ice cream machine won't work.

I think we have different ideas of the aims of an army. For me, it's strictly defensive. The special forces are purely for projecting military power on others, anyway. If the entire citizenry is an already trained reserve force, and the state has no interest in the exertion of power, then I would think it preferable to a professional and costly standing army.

it's a paper tiger. by far the most reservists arent combat ready if there ever would be a war.

Yes but her successor AKK only got the job because she was too incompetent to become chancellor candidate

Our police and special forces are decent since they are professional. The army is embarassing in comparison

Nope, that's France

This. I have a friend who is in the Bundeswehr and he does jack shit all day

First of all, you have no idea what you’re talking about. Don’t pretend like you know what an operation is like when you clearly don’t. Second, if your army is deprived of logistical supplies in any capacity, you’re already not an effective fighting force.

>The special forces are purely for projecting military power on others,
Simply not true. We can sit here and argue about what defensive use of an army actually entails but regardless, American SOF exists in every branch of the Armed Forces and even in departments that would be considered traditionally defensive as you imply and they’re still the most effective.

Standard operating procedure for Zig Forums pseuds

It’s good, although it’s been better in the past. I’m fucking glad I’m out tho

Effective at what, exactly? I get that they're the most well-trained, so does that just make them the best of their respective departments?

Are you serving?
