I was working for a year in an Austrian youth center. There were a lot of Chechens. They are not Arabs but also distant and religious.
One of the main things why young people not assimilate is actually the local people. They would treat you fine but never as an equal, therefore, young Chechens know that they will never belong to that society, doesn't matter what they do. So they focus on their ethnicity and religion instead, because they want to belong to some group. IMO

Humans are social mammals that need to stick in a group. People will ask them: "but where are you really from?", so in the end they will disintegrate themselves from society, and join in to a subculture.
