It was mostly Armenian under the Russian Empire with an Azeri minority. Stalin let the region be part of the Azerbaijan SSR for some reason. In the 90s the Armos is drove out the Azeris while the Azeris were purging Armenians in Baku. Now the Azeris and their Turkish patrons retook it.

From what I can tell the Armenians will still have the biggest city Stepankert while the Azeris will resettle the second-biggest Susha, which was historically their population center in the region.
The thing is Stepankert and Susha are very close and if either side wants to start shelling the other they can easily do it.
I don't envy the Russkies trying to keep peace there.

no to long ago, baku was 20% armenian and yerevant was 20% azeri and artsakh was a good 50-50. Staline fuck'd the shit up with shitty border. Over the time there were alot of displacement. Most of the azeri's are now in grozny. I really wish armenia and azerbaijan could be frens again. It might be wrong but keep in mind that the soviet census only takes into account the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast area, which isn't the same as what's being shown in that map (Armenian-controlled territory), basically it's an enclave or Armenian majority areas surrounded by a sea of azeris, and later armenians took over those azeri majority areas as well and connected themselves to Armenia proper.
