there is a lot of "english" teachers in China that are not native english speakers. As long as you have a degree in English despite not being native you still can teach english even in Japan, Korea etc...

People shouldn't teach unless they are trained to teach, in that subject specifically.
If you speak a language you are not necessarily qualified to teach anything. Speaking a language and teaching it to someone else are two very different things. Same with any other subject: even if you have a PhD in physics, you could very well be a horrible physics teacher.

Even worse is the notion that a trained teacher in one subject, can just teach any subject. I have degrees in history, and also a teaching degree. I know here in Belgium such people are often employed as teachers in geography, Dutch, or a general humanities class for schools that offer technical education. I think that's bullshit. I'm not qualified to teach subjects outside of history. I was only taught how to teach history. I know as much about geography as anyone that has finished high school. It's ridiculous.

Knowing geography is not teaching geography. I thought I already made that point clear. Being a qualified teacher is about more than possessing the necessary knowledge. Teaching is more about the 'how' than the 'what'. I have absolutely no clue how to teach geography. I know how to teach history. Teaching history is about more than transferring the knowledge from a book to a student's mind. Same with geography. But I was never taught the proper methods for teaching geography.

If you look white and speak English well and have a degree, any degree, you can teach English in China. Whether you should or not is a different matter.

I dunno if it's the same worldwide, but in italy the closest to foreign language university would be foreign literature where you study literature not the language and you don't even study only one, you have to choose like 2 or 3 languages iirc. that hardly sounds related to being an english speaking teacher

It’s not. Even in America and even if you’re a native English speaker, you can get a degree in English. It’s a common degree among literati types. Usually they want to write or study literature but obviously you could teach English with it as well. That’s different that what you’re talking about. The closest thing we have to that is like Comparative Literature. It doesn’t matter so much either way. You can teach in Asia if you want to if you have a degree and speak English well.

You have to be a gora to teach English in East Asian countries. That’s like a hidden requirement. I literally passed with distinction from Delhi University with Honours in English, got a verification from the Bureau of Indian Standards which sets the standards for Indian dialect of English, did my masters from Cambridge in Sociology and English and I still ended up teaching sociology here and not English in Japan because they rejected my application when they saw me in person. Bear in mind I have a British citizenship as well and I did not show my Indian citizenship papers while applying in Japan.

My English is better than most English natives out there who are usually white trash low class Chavs, literal untermenschen living on government benefits. But they’d get hired and I wouldn’t.

A Pakistani guy who was also with me, a close friend rather, got hired and his scores and qualifications were worse than mine! I’m 100% sure it had to do with him being white passing.
