I don’t know, but if I have to guess, it’s brainwashing to allow restaurant owners to save money on wages while making patrons feel like they’re good people for doing the heavy lifting. It’s all a trick to keep people poor and stupid, same reason personal finances don’t get taught in school but social justice gets screamed into your ear no matter where you go.

Because the waiter is the one waiting on you so if they’re attentive they get a bigger tip, if not they don’t. The chef can’t be more or less attendant. He just cooks and if he was, you wouldn’t know anyway.

Not paying attention, getting your order wrong, not checking on you, being rude. There’s a million ways that waiters manage to be bad.

It's up to the owner to pay for his staff. Not the customer. Are you niggas just tipping the waiter? Why not the entire staff? Why not extend this tipping scheme to entire workforce?
Btw why arent fast food workers tipped? They take the order and bring the food to the table also

when I delivered pizza for domino's people would sometimes tip me 10 or 20 dollars just to deliver them a single pizza and some breadsticks. they weren't even rich areas.

people like to be nice, bar owners, restaurateurs and similar realised their service were making tonnes of cash so they reduced wages. They pay less tax so now a tip is expected for service at all in the states

it provides an organic incentive for a service worker to do their job promptly and pleasantly

you will find in other countries that service is inferior on average

Tipping is based because you get rich people feeling generous who decide to overtip, making delivery and restaurant jobs pay way more than they would otherwise. I made the annual equivalent of $45k/yr while bartending in grad school. I think Americans who complain that they're being hurt by tipping tend to work less popular shifts at shitty restaurants.
