Yes, Dutch people will say it's the other way around, but with a couple of hours of study a Dutch person would be able to understand 99% of what an Afrikaanssprekende is saying

But to comment on what you said, Afrikaans was rebuilt from the ground up after it became a creole. There were 5 different dialects of broken Dutch being spoken in South Africa. Afrikaans os therefore much simpler than dutch. Written Afrikaans looks a fair bit like phonetic English. There is even a poem that can be read in Afrikaans or English and have roughly the same meaning

Im Dutch-Irish and was raised bilingual.
The only time Afrikaans is hard to understand is when you use purely Afrikaans words that are so bastardized from English or Dutch that it's like a whole new word.
Like when one of you Afrikaans boys posted the leuloop song.
if not for the lion in the video and the description of how to do de leuloop i'd have a hard time figuring the word out.

Mmmh, I beg to differ. I have been studying Dutch for a while now and Afrikaans is my home language. There are a few Afrikaans words that came from Old Dutch but was not preserved in Dutch "snaaks" vs "grappig". There was a stronger push for purely Germanic words in Afrikaans "aanvaar" vs "accepteer" etc. Then further, the way we pronounce things is a little different but you could get the grip of that in a couple of minutes.

Nee, "krapbroekie" klinkt maar als een boemer neologisme zodat jonges niet ze taal mengen. Zal maar zeg "deurtrekker" (deur=door) of de Engelse woord gebruik.
