The number one difference for me is that automatics Ive driven have a fluid linkage between the engine and the wheels whereas the manual is direct drive, meaning when you use the accelerator in an auto it has this weird wet sponge feeling where the engine will start spinning before power gets to the wheels.
Also clutching, downshifting, engine braking. It is more annoying to drive manual in heavy traffic however

I think most countries in Europe still use manual. A couple of friends of mine who need to travel a lot for their work had to learn to drive manual just because auto dealerships in several Euro countries often only had manual cars.

The experience differs greatly dependong on the exact make/car. I drive a cheap Japanese car right now and its automatic transmission is kinda sluggish, but before I drove a pricier German car with an automatic transmission and it was genuinely seamless.

Not every car benefits from a raw driving experience. I drive a big heavy American land yacht, a sedan that's as wide and long as a full-sized American pickup truck. Complete with a soft suspension and comfy seats, as well as a detuned V8 purring away. The thought of having a manual in such a car is disgustingly tryhard to me, unless it's a pre-war car.

I'm gonna be that one guy: direct drive or direct prise refers to the gear ration on the last gear, the term you're looking for here is mechanical linkage. The reason the auto has this spongy feeling is because with viscous coupling the oil is slippery when slow but gets thicker as it moves and engages the gearbox that way, so the engine needs to spin a bit to get it to that point before you get some real power going to the wheels, feels similar to turbo lag.

It's bad service IMO, should get something nicer when the customer is paying money. And the syncros and clutch go bad when not used properly and clients can be bad drivers.

I remember doing my semester in Vienna and they acted like dryers were a stupid American invention and dried their clothes outside and it would end up smelling like wet dog. But my Swedish friend told me Scandinavians use dryers. Europeans act like manual is superior but Scandis seem to realize that automatic is better like Americans.

Good autos are few and far between in low-to-mid tier cars sold on the European market. The average buyer can't afford a 3 Series, so that leaves you with "automated manuals" (e.g. VW's ASG, Citroën's ETG6, Opel's Easytronic, Fiat's Dualogic) which are head-noddingly slow and jerky and should not even be considered unless it's an absolute necessity.
