Is it true that indians that move to the west can convert to christianism or other religion to escape the caste system?
Is it true that indians that move to the west can convert to christianism or other religion to escape the caste system?
you can't escape the caste thing. you are born into your caste. its your family name. your clan. your tribe. your ancestors. you can't separate yourself by blood.
pakistanis converted to islam in 700 AD, yet they have Pashtuns, Jatts, Rajputs, they're all their separate castes with specific cultural and marriage rules.
is it true though? do you know what caste your friends and coworkers belong to? or do you really care? I have never experienced or seen differentiated treatment based on caste IRL(except admission quotas). but everyone on the internet keeps reminding me so
I'm mallu and all Mallus (except for Brahmins) just have their father's name and the place they're born to as their surname so there's no way to know someone's caste unless they tell you themselves.
And also this Does any sane, non autist person in cities care about caste bullshit aside from during college admission?
no, but in workplace or school you're not supposed to discuss your caste anyway because rules.
but, people on a personal level still care. a guy asked my caste and i told him, and he became very happy, let out a "birader!" and hugged me and said we're one and the same so we should look out for each other. my caste belongs to sudra varna, we used to be blacksmiths.
i dont know the caste of most of my mates because i never asked them, yes, but a few people will still care and they will expect you to favour them if you belong to to the same community as them.
So that brings it back to the point that only weird autists care about their castes in cities?
It’s not a hierarchy any more, it’s become like a community thing. I don’t know how to explain it, it’s like Pashtun clans or American “hoods”. You’re supposed to look out for your folk. If you don’t you’re a sellout. Go out sometime and hang around with actual people not your sheltered upper class high school friends.
I live in a small town in Kerala and I'm lower caste lol.
what if a dalit immigrates to usa wins lottery and comes back to india?
how do people react?
Dalits and Lower castes literally make 50% of the government by law. It’s like asking how do Americans react when an African American wins a lottery to Europe and comes back rich. It’s not that bad anymore to be a Dalit but sometimes it can get fucked up especially in the rural areas where only a decade ago they were shooting them up 2bh
And to answer the OP, no. Converting to abrahamic faiths doesn't help Dalits either. Both Muslims and Christians in South Asia practice caste system or caste based discrimination as well. That's why the Dalit Movement leader - Dr. Ambedkar urged all Dalits to convert to Buddhism instead
How do foreigners fit in the caste system? In practice what level of respect do they receive?
Christians and Muslims also practise caste system.
We have caste system in Nepal too, and most don't care about caste when they move to the west.
they dont. It’s like asking what Arab clan do you belong to? it doesnt apply to you.
in practice europeans/east asians receive a lot of respect because they’re seen as high class travellers from developed countrys, ethiopians and Somalis almost blend in, but in Delhi area Nigerians get attacked by gangs bc many nigerians are drug dealers and they do shady shit but ppl are low iq to differentiate.
But is it also practiced in the west among indian diaspora?
Yeah. Especially when they're looking to marry off their sons or daughters, they wont marry to lower caste christians or muslims. There was a viral post where an ex Supreme Court judge shared a post about his interaction with a rich upper caste muslim family, where they were looking for a groom for their daughter within their own community. The Judge asked them by their own community if they meant muslim they said no, within their Syed community, and wouldnt want to marry their daughter to a 'chamar'(lower caste) muslim.

god damn it i'm drunk
Kim, what the actual hell are you talking about? You do realize that each of the castes have roles associated with them right? Caste is not even slightly comparable to race - India is a post-racial society like Asia, everyone's utterly mutted
i'm just making an analogy to the concept that's all
Quite a shitty analogy, Kim
But again like he said, caste =/= race. Castes are equivalent to feudal system in the sense, everyone is supposed to keep doing their jobs and marry within their own community.
you seem triggered by the way

These are the only two movies from non Hindi cinema I've watched
Most people are going to give you Bollywood/Hindi film recommendations so I'll give you a few Malayalam film recs.
Watch Jalikattu if you like intense films. It's a bit to take in though but it's a solid film.
Kumbalangi Nights if you want to watch something comfy
Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum is just a great film overall.
Kammatipaadam is a gangster film that's a bit controversial because some people seem to dislike it while others (like me) like it a lot. Recommend this too.
I'll add in a Hindi film for good measure. Most people are gonna recommend films like Andhadhun and Tumbaad, so I'll recommend-
1) Gangs Of Wasseypur 1 & 2. Amazing films, nothing else to say. Possibly in my Top 10 favorite films of all time.
2) Trapped. High intensity, short kino.
3) Udaan - well crafted coming of age film.
