Hungary was already autonomous since 1867. They weren't 100% independent since they were still in a union with Austria but for the most part they were. It's like saying Poland wasn't independent in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

You know France actually tried to avoid the conflict right? When war was about to break out, French troops were drawn 100 kilometres away from the border as a sign of goodwill. Not only was France drawn into the war because it had to uphold its alliance with Russia, Germany actually declared war on both countries simultaneously to gain a time advantage. That and the violation of Belgian neutrality allowed Germany to keep the war on French soil, causing enormous damage to the French and Belgian economies, eventually leading to the Treaty of Versailles' harsh terms. Germans fought like chimps and were defeated as such.
