South has the right idea, larping around heritages you are multiple generations removed from is cringe

They were, dare I say it, too based and had to be knocked down a few pegs.

Aren't a lot of white people from that region of Scottish or Northern Irish ancestry?

Would have thought there'd be a few in Illinois and Michigan.

There are, this self-identified map is garbo. Chicago alone has more Poles (first-generation immigrants) than some cities in Poland. Detroit, Milwaukee and Pittsburgh also had/have large Polish communities.

Old stock anglos and scots

Presumably. After the injuns got kicked out the South was settled mostly by O.G. colonists and their descendants (not to mention their black friends) so there was a lot more direct British Isles ancestry down there. The slave economy meant no industry and less independent farmsteading, and thus less immigration in the following waves.

Do German Americans and Nordic Americans have relatives back home they still are in touch with?

french in louisiana is mostly black french i think

They're descended from exiled French Canadians, but there is a sizeable black population there too.

No

No the black French people are mixed race and are mainly in New Orleans. The rest you see is basically French speaking rednecks who live in swamps.

There's no such thing as ethnic brits, it's a purely political identity.

How do you know?

From years on this site where similar questions have been asked. There are few recent migrants from Germany to the usa.

I don't want to pretend I know, and I'd really like Americans here to answer your question themselves, but I think them having relatives "back home" mostly is an exception. Most families came ~1850, that's probably too long to trace back properly. Those who came after WW2 maybe still have contacts, but even then it diverged quite a bit since then...

Most people came with their entire families or didn’t have any families to leave behind. Italian-Americans specifically have had a lot of familial ties with Italy in the past, it’s one of the reasons the Italian mafia got started here. But over the decades I think most people have lost touch with whatever family they had overseas, excluding recent immigrants.

As an ethnic Brit, I disagree

Even the government national census recognises British as an ethnicity

Let's not get started on questioning the ethnic or national validity of Poland or the Poles as a people, as others in history have done
