People were always closer to the middle. Look at gay rights, for example. Even when gay sex was technically illegal in much of the US, those laws weren't enforced often except in cases of rape.

Friend of mine from the states grew up in a super religious family and went to religious schools until he hit college, he fucked off here to Sweden then instead as an exchange student.
He lives three states over from his parents now, part of some atheist movement group just to spite them.
