because the police can make the law on what firearm is prohibited and what isn't, so essentially at any point you can wake up and be a felon for owning a firearm that was legal the night before, and your choices are to either sell it to someone internationally, turn it in to the police and lose 1.5k or whatever you've spent, or bury it in your garden (unless you've registered it)

Untrue. You get a long term authorization to transport (ATT) that automatically allows you to transport a restricted firearm to any range or gunship within your province of residence. You don't need to tell the police ahead of time, or call anyone. You can just put it in a gun case and drive to the range whenever.
