communism / socialism in japan has always been niche, but very constant. up to this day the communist party takes 10% of the national vote every election.
also, there are bigger pro-china hawks inside the ldp than in the communist party.
in short, foreigners shouldnt talk about japanese politics because they cant understand it. they focus too much n left vs right and that doesnt work here.

Japanese like big government protection, welfare, big national industry, life time employment, safety nets, public education, etc. just from the get go you can see this are left leaning policies, yet we have conservative government for decades. this in japan is not a problem at all, it just how it is. also difficult religion like islam or christiany have no root here, so their teachings dont count into policies (like abortion in the US). also, very important thing, despite everything above, there are no clear left wing parties in japan. everything ranges from centrist to conservative. yes, even the communist party. their most radical policy would be something like ending the US - Japan alliance
to put it very simple, if you want to speak about right and left in japan then see it ONLY in this terms:
right

>pro liberalization and privatization
