I just got the nano x, was wary about it at first but I fucking love it. definitely recommend
Jeremiah Sanchez
As far as safety, yes, ledger is going to be an upgrade over MM. Metamask is a hot wallet in general, it's exposed/online whenever your browser is open.
Ledger is just fundamentally safer, your private keys are better separated
Benjamin Long
My Nano X arrives Tuesday. Excited
Christian Butler
can you store shitcoins on it?
Josiah Mitchell
Hey fren I too just ordered the nano x Any advice ? Also building it a faraday cage Cheers for advice if you're able.
Michael Foster
i got a nano s years ago. does the bluetooth not spook you?
Nathaniel Watson
Yes if you have more than 10k IMO you need a cold storage solution. Nothing is foolproof but Ledgers and Trezors are good and is orders of magnitude more secure than metamask.
Owen Howard
i put mine in a faraday container anyway
Jordan Cruz
Checked. If you want something more flexible (literally), we use faraday bags in private investigation when forensically examining a cell phone. Keeps it from transmitting or receiving anything at all. Lots of manufacturers, but the idea is all the same: Your device does not exist as far as the global network is concerned so long as it's inside.
Christian Clark
may i ask what is your occupation?
Jayden Moore
I have a nano x and its the best damn decision ive made
Small private investigation family business. We do forensics, surveillance, research, background checks, bug sweeps, sometimes subcontract out security systems, etc.
Jayden Foster
this is one bad firmware update from being totally compromised.
just use MyCrypto with an airgapped computer and store the wallets on encrypted USB drives.
They made it a huge pain in the ass to get a license since we first went into business. You've gotta do years as an intern before you're allowed to work for yourself. Experienced investigators can make pretty good money, but it's not amazing cash unless you end up some ultra high-profile guy with major cases under your belt (like news-worthy) and with a lot of resources. The neat thing is that there's a lot of opportunity for sideways expansion, but the startup cost on each theoretical department is huge. We've had people call us asking for autopsy services, crime lab analysis, financial forensics, DNA testing, etc.
Everybody wants to know something, you know?
Luis Sanchez
Cheap Faraday bag replacement is simply double wrapping in foil. Of course a bespoke solution is better but this works too if wrapped properly.
Ayden Taylor
What sort of faraday cage do you guys use? Link it here?
Julian Wilson
Search for Faraday bags. Police use it to stop mobile transmission. Source: was detective.
Luis Phillips
anyone have any recommendations for seed phrase safekeeping? Thinking about getting one of the ColdTI things
Christopher Barnes
an encrypted USB drive
Dominic Rivera
Put seeds in a paragraph. Use cipher to encrypt that.
Juan Sullivan
You have to ground that foil for it to be effective. Run a wire from the foil to the ground prong on an outlet or a metal water pipe.
Jonathan Cruz
>also today my first experience with fucking gas prices on MM? I have to buy gas to transfer to coin base? >theres no getting around it? This is one of the biggest lessons I've learned. It cost me a lot of fucking money. Keep your crypto safe as possible but also as liquid as possible. Be able to move it at a moments notice if you have to. I fucked around and had mine stuck and kept putting off getting eth. I got burned hard.
Samuel Howard
Can someone redpill me on hardware wallets? I don't understand why you need such a dedicated piece of hardware just to store private keys offline? Is it just a usb stick with seed phrase protection? Obviously I'm missing some functionality or security measure I just don't know what.
Eli Wilson
it's not safer except against purely cyber threats. but in itself with the default security scheme it's definitely unfit for cold store. and it's also stupid as these are definitely hot wallets.
Logan Cooper
>I don't understand why you need such a dedicated piece of hardware just to store private keys offline? you don't. it's a meme. they are good if you actually want to transact from an unsafe machine. but lose custody of the device or the seed phrase and you are fucked. they don't actually help you manage your secrets. they just lull you into a false sense of security.
Connor Miller
I bought both and I honestly prefer the nano s. they both have all the functionality I need. All ERC20 tokens are stored under ethereum, so the storage is not a problem.
Nano X is better if you: want to use bluetooth want to store lots of seperate cryptocurrencies like something slightly nicer feeling
Landon Thomas
no management and handling of keys... ever. imagine that. 100% security. just like having a paper wallet with the ability to do transfers.
Parker Lopez
they are one firmware update away from being compromised. they also have been physically compromised:
from my understanding, there are two main reasons 1. convenience. Its much more work to set up an offline machine from which you sign transactions. hardware wallets can connect to web3 providers like metamask and are basically as easy as using a hot wallet 2. for long term storage, hardware wallets are better than usb drives. usb drives are not meant to store data for a long time, but rather data transfer. if unpowered for a while (10 years maybe) they can lose data. hardware wallets are supposed to have some guarantee of long term storage capability
Evan Cox
how long can you store a hardware wallet before it breaks down and stops working? 10 years?
this hack is not sustainable in real life. let me guess you prefer trezor? I hate that shit tribalism on those two. trezor was REALLY exploitable in the first versions, you was able to install an exploit who told you pin and seed. wtf was that, huh?
Henry Richardson
you shouldn't depend on that anyhow. your hardware wallet can stop functioning any minute. any fucking minute. that's how you handle it.
Dominic Gutierrez
>Small private investigation family Seems like a pretty interesting profession. You must have all sorts of interesting stories.
