Cost estimator

How do people do this job for years? Got a job as an estimator for a civil construction company a few months ago and I thought it would be fun to just crunch numbers and shit but 2 things I failed to realize, just what went in to cost estimating and how fucking boring it is to be in an office all day. When I worked hard labor unrelated to this field I dreamed about being in an office but the grass is not greener as they say. I want to blow my head off after 2-3 hours. Not to mention just how much is involved with the construction field. I have respect for anyone that has done this longer than a year

Yep the fun part is being the person that hires them

Kek ive been doing it for nearly a decade

I did it for two years. Went on biz in my copious amounts of free time. Also managed all my personal finance spreadsheets.

What field is it in and how do you stay sane? While very little physical stress the mental stress is fatiguing in its on way.

id prefer not to say but construction not too dissimilar to yourself. They money is decent and I can get by with 75% effort so it's not that bad really. I don't think I can take much longer though. Weed helps me cope and keep on wagin'

I quit smoking for the job because I am unsure of drug testing policies when it comes to this type of work or if office people even get tested but I do miss coming home from work and elevating with a little herb. Wish it didn't have such a bad stigma attached to it. Im not a stoner more of an after work couple puffs and im good.

I've never been tested yet, do you live in the US?

Yeah PA

Ah I live in the UK, I don't work in corporate office so I probably get off a lot easier than you kek

i took a class in cost/managmenet accounting, enjoyed it. but i assume you aren't doing cost accounting. what exactly are your job duties?

It's not corporate. I wasnt tested to get the job just not sure if they are going to do randoms. I got the job because my buddy knew someone and hooked me up.

Estimating the cost of construction jobs in simple terms. There is so much involved that I never realized, all the little details you have to find in plans figure out the labor hours, materials, equipment, etc. Gets very meticulous at times and easy to miss/overlook something.

Good luck bro

maybe you'd enjoy a career in procurement more?

Not sure what that entails exactly but Im not sure what I want to do anymore. Ill look into though, thanks user.

That's always the case when you start something new. I work in a similar money-management type role (far too niche for me to mention here) and at the start I would take so much longer to so things because they didn't come to me naturally. With time this becomes second nature and takes up much less of your thinking power, which you can spend doing the things you enjoy. Just collect the pay, invest and retire early. You'll be alright bro.

Maybe it is just because it's new to me and I got into this field way later than most of these guys did. I've never seen a set of plans until a few months ago so that's all new as well. It gets stressful and boring at times but maybe when I learn everything the boredom will be different because I will know what to expect everyday.

Keep your head down and get good experience, then go freelance. It's what I did. Never looked back.

That's it man. Unfortunately there's no fast track for experience. I'm one of those guys who likes categorizing and fixing shit that's incorrect, so it doesn't really get boring for me, but if you find after the stress period has passed that you're still unhappy, then maybe consider your options. Good luck buddy.

thx my man

Why dont you have a spreadsheet that automates most of the process

you should hire me to make spreadsheets that will automate your work

there is a lot of things that are setup but there's some things that you can't. I had to learn a piece of software that create QTO's and that was a task in and of itself, I thought after I learned that I was golden but there seems to be endless new tasks and software being thrown at me. I am still learning a lot too and I think like the other user pointed out, it's probably because it's all new to me, just about every aspect of the job is. I will re-evaluate in a few more months but as it stands there is an information overload at times it's making me want to bash my skull into a mulch machine at times.

>there is a lot of things that are setup but there's some things that you can't.
False. Spreadsheets can automate ANYTHING.

maybe but even they are new to me and I dont see how they can automate a QTO.. You have to create a 3d map of the project and calculate volumes and such before you can do anything that is automated. The software helps with creating a QTO because it was done by hand in the past but just learning the software for calculating them was stressful. Then I had several other tasks while learning that thrown at me.

>I wasnt tested to get the job just not sure if they are going to do randoms
I've never had a real job, but my gut says that for office jobs they don't do randoms, especially if you didn't get tested applying. Drug testing is for blue collar grunt work, not white collar.

>i dont see how a spreadsheet can automate volume calculations
OP You gotta learn spreadsheets

This, Drugtests only occur when you file for workers comp
