that wasn’t meant to depict a slum, it was a gorgeous little poor backstreet in Naha which is the wealthiest part of Okinawa, which is one of the poorest prefectures in the country
they don’t have racial jungles quite the same way but spend a night in Kabukicho in Tokyo plagued by nigerian touts and you’ll truly believe NYC isn’t as bad

Am I worried about that? No. Am I worried about the fact that I can’t withdraw money from the ATM after 10pm and I’ll be fucked with a bill I can’t pay if I don’t carry $1k in cash on me at all times? Absolutely. There are a lot of “how the fuck is this place so behind the times” moments hiding behind the veneer of an advanced society, and anyone that tells you crime doesn’t exist there is drinking liquid horseshit. It’s just better organized and less chaotic, but it’s securely rooted into the society. A trucker ran from a DUI on my drive to work one day and blocked off the entire highway to my office. Same shit I’d expect from a drunk mexican in Texas, for instance.
The cops there are both friendlier and scarier than the US. I talked down two cops out of arresting two marines drunk off-base solely because I spoke the language just poorly enough to get by. That’s the friendly side. The evil side is they have a 99% conviction rate and literally beat confessions out of suspects as the status quo.

But you know how much of the society is face-conscious and you know there’s a lot dirtier than you’re seeing. Same dumb shit happens everywhere. Watched a dude get absolutely beat down by security outside of a cabaret club one night, everyone on the little side street acted like it wasn’t even there. Seen plenty of dudes just drop trou and piss all over the place in broad daylight, worse than I ever saw when I lived in Koreatown in LA (and trust me that was fucking filthy).
